Discovered in the late-1970s, the pioneering drug Ivermectin was a derivative of avermectin. avermectin arose from the isolation, in a lab in Japan from a novel soil-dwelling bacterium. In 1974 the research was given to the pharma giant Merck & Co. Just 1 year later they discovered it produced a potent anthelmintic substance (super parasite killer), which was then turned into an anti-parasitic product Ivermectin. Initially focus was on its applicability to veterinary science and animal de-worming and the product was introduced commercially in 1981 for the control of parasites in livestock.

Subsequently research by many scientific teams discovered special applications for human medicines which were soon after developed and successfully implemented in partnership with the W.H.O. (World Health Organization) and several non-governmental organizations (NGOs). It is important to note that in an EXTREMELY rare occurrence, Merk & Co in an unprecedented move and with unheralded commitment, benevolently donated Ivermectin under the brand name Mectizan.  Ivermectin began to be distributed in 1988, with operations being organized through the independent Mectizan Donation Program (MDP) which was established and funded by Merck & Co. Thereafter, OCP (the Onchocerciasis Control Program in W. Africa), used controlled larviciding combined with Ivermectin treatment or, in some areas, to Ivermectin treatment alone. Ivermectin swiftly became the drug of choice for the treatment of Onchocerciasis due to its unique and potent micro-bacterial elimination with the absence of ANY severe side effects and its excellent safety record! It is now the sole tool being used in disease elimination campaigns in 16 African countries, orchestrated by the African Program for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC), which commenced operations in 1996. A single annual dose of 150 ug/kg of Ivermectin, given orally, can reduce the level of skin microfilariae to zero and, by interfering with worm embryogenesis, can delay the build-up of new microfilariae for a period of up to two years! OCP was closed in December 2002 after virtually stopping disease transmission in all target nations except Sierra Leone where operations were hampered by civil war. It literally ERADICATED the disease!
