Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley has tweeted some helpful clues to players anxious about their beta invitations for the studio's upcoming pseudo-sandbox shooter, PlanetSide 2. He posted,There seems to be some confusion about PS1 Vets and the PS2 Beta. Let me clear it up once and for all. There are going to be multiple phases of the beta. Simply put we are adding more people in different waves simply due to capacity. Every single PS1 player who has ever subscribed to the game will have their Station Account activated at some point during the beta beginning with people who actively are subscribers. Again though we can only let in so many people during each phase so invitations are by necessity going to be staggered. So basically if you've ever subbed to the game you're going to be in. However current subs are in the front of the line for that. In addition we have Priority beta keys given out [and] they will be let in in the early phases as well. For people that ask me, "I played from 2005-2007 am I in soon?" the answer is you will be in in an early phase. In other words: patience. You're getting in! But Smedley does warn, "This is a real beta. Not a marketing gimmick." So be prepared to do some actual testing.

If I only had more time. If only I had all the time in the world to game to my heart's content without giving up the other aspects of my life that are precious to me. If only I could go back in time and tell myself to play Game Y instead of Game X.Ah, wishes and horses. Both are full of poop! But if wishes could be horses, I'd love to have some time to go back and play Anarchy Online hardcore.
I don't know what it is about this game that keeps calling me back with its retro appeal. But every year I go through a phase when I download the client and re-enter the world of Rubi-Ka for another attempt at mastering this 11-year-old title. It doesn't stick, but the fondness and desire remains. Why do I play it? I'm going to be coy and make you work for the answer.

We're about to enter the "dog days of August," and lately, I've felt as if I'm in the dog days of kid-friendly MMOs. There are many titles to choose from, yet many of them feel all too familiar, and after a while, they start to blend together. Of course, there are some that push the boundaries and shine, and I've been trying to cover those in this column. But in this week's MMO Family, I'd like to get my rant on and look at a few characteristics of kid-friendly MMOs that really need to go. They've outlasted their welcome and are holding back the genre, so I'm calling them out!Continue reading MMO Family: Moving beyond the mundane in kid-friendly MMOs

What about those funky bright-colored uniforms, though?
Those were a tough sell to my buddy, at least prior to SOE's latest PS2 trailer. The gamemaker has joined forces with Blur Studio to produce a grim, grey romp through the far future battlefields of Auraxis. There is a bit of Terran Republic red in the three-minute clip, but it's mostly from the blood splattering across armor, windshields, and the camera lens.
We got a 45-second tease of the clip last week, but this time around we can see the whole heart-pounding picture. There's no actual game footage on display, but the video is nonetheless a welcome tease of what's to come as PlanetSide 2 moves into closed beta testing. Check it out after the cut.

I'm kind of a concept art freak, especially when it comes to games. I can't draw or paint at all, though, so I have to live vicariously through the many talented artists working on MMOs today. As a result, I've got a whole section of my hard drive stuffed with digitized paintings, loading screen captures, and all manner of concept art miscellany. Some of my favorite pieces hail from games like Age of Conan, Guild Wars 2, and the EverQuest franchise (particularly the art produced for the Legends of Norrath card game). What about you, early risers? What game features your favorite concept art?
Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

It seems like only a scant few months have passed since we covered the launch of Need for Speed World, EA's street racing MMO. But NFSW celebrates its second anniversary today, kicking it off with a double XP boost for everyone as well as a free Chevy Camaro ZL1 for all registered players. In honor of the occasion, the dev team invited us to a group interview session culminating in a race-off during which we got to show just how hot (or not) our racing skills were. Lead Producer Marc de Vellis and Lead Designer Melvin Teo were on hand to answer our questions and talk about how the game has grown over the past two years. They enthusiastically discussed the ways they've developed NFSW as a result of community feedback, both in terms of game features and in terms of community interaction. Read on for a look at what changes they've made to keep their virtual drivers coming back for another lap.
